Black Sunflower

There are two types of sunflower seeds available for bird feeding - the larger striped sunflower seeds, and the smaller, high oil black sunflower seeds. While some cage and aviary birds can eat both types of seed, we would always recommend choosing the smaller black ones for feeding wild birds. This is because they are high in oils that provide energy, as well as fibre, calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, B and E.

Another benefit of using black sunflower seeds is that the hulls, or skins, are much thinner than the larger, striped varieties. This means wild birds visiting your garden will have no problem getting through the hulls and into the plump, oil-rich hearts of the seed inside. Because they are such a versatile seed they can be used in ground and table feeding, in bird feeders, mixed into seed mixes, or used as a supplement if you are making your own suet cakes or fat balls.

Because they are so high in natural minerals and oils, black sunflower seeds will keep birds returning to your feeding station again and again. Though great for a huge range of wild bird species, black sunflower seeds are particularly great for blackbirds, chaffinches, bramblings, dunnocks, greenfinches, goldfinches, nuthatches, tree sparrows, house sparrows, song thrushes and yellowhammers.
