Rat, Hamster, Mouse and Gerbil Food

Lots of people keep small rodents as pets, but it can be difficult to know whether the diet you are feeding them is beneficial to their health. This is why we have formulated our own small rodent food mix, which provides the dietary requirements needed by hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice.

Our small rodent food is a high-protein mix designed to satisfy the dietary needs of a range of small pet rodents. It is partly a muesli and dried fruit mix, with added barley, maize, striped sunflower seeds, peanuts, oats, wheat and monkey nuts. Rodents are natural foragers, which means they will love picking through the various nuts, seeds and muesli pieces. It is also a great source of energy, and full of chewy treats to help keep their teeth strong and healthy.

Like most pets, rodents need a balanced diet consisting of many different varieties of food. Our rodent mix will provide a comprehensive food, but your gerbil or hamster will benefit by having this supplemented with other treats. Try also giving them small amounts of different fruits or vegetables, such as pears, melons, apple, cucumber and carrot. They will also love to gnaw on hay, so keep plenty of that available too, along with a constant supply of fresh water.

Rats and mice are omnivores, and may benefit from being given small amounts of lean meat, cooked egg, grains or pulses alongside their normal food. They will also benefit from being given small amounts of fruit and vegetables. However, be careful not to give them any harmful foods, such as citrus fruit, walnuts, grapes, raisins or rhubarb. Rats and mice also love sweet and fatty foods, but always use these in moderation, and avoid anything containing dairy or chocolate.
